Lo1 visual and special effects

Definitions of -Visual Effects and Special Effects

Digital compositing: is digitally combining multiple images or video elements to create a single, cohesive final image or sequence. The goal of this effect is making the scene look as if all the elements were originally part of the footage. This gives the viewer the immersive effect of realism.

Blue/ green screen: is a solid colored backdrop that is used in post production as part of the visual effects technique called chroma keying.

Chromakey: allows you to remove a specific color (of the blue/green screen) from an image or video and make it transparent, so that another image or video can be placed behind it. In this scene it is used to transform the background of this clip to make it look like the man is balancing on a bridge instead of being filmed on agree screen set. This creates drama as it transforms the clip into looks like a realistic dangerous stunt.

Computer-generated imagery (CGI): is any still or moving visual 3D computer graphics created primarily with computer software. In this scene it is used to depict the superhuman movement of the character Spider-Man, this creates drama and intrigue as this movement would not be easily replicated by a stunt double.

Mattes: is essentially a mask or a stencil that defines which areas of an image or video are visible and which are transparent, Its primary purpose is to allow multiple visual elements to be combined seamlessly into a single, cohesive final image or sequence. This allows the scene to appear like their is a hoard of army troops instead of a small section of actors playing trooper to make the scene appear more threatening and oppressive.

Morphing: is used to smoothly transforming one image or shape into another. In this scene its used to smoothly transition faces of different people to make it look like the model is transforming into another model.

Rotoscoping and 3D graphics: artists do this by manually trace over live-action footage, frame by frame, to create a silhouette of an element within the shot. This mask can then be used to separate the element from its background or to apply animation.

Mechanized props (e.g. robotic arms, animatronics): mechanized props are designed to perform actions on cue, The use of the Spider-Man mask's movement connotes themes of complexed advance si-fi robotics and intelligence.

Stunt props (e.g. sugar glass, balsa wood props): when actors or stunt performers need to interact with objects in a way that would be dangerous with a real or prop or setting. In this scene sugar glass is used to mimic a real window being crashed through and shattered.

Scale models (e.g. buildings, spacecrafts): are used for depicting large-scale objects, vehicles, or environments that are too expensive, impractical, or impossible to film in real life. In this scene a fantastical realistic castell is shown to depict the setting the characters were in.

Makeup (e.g. prosthetics): are custom-made, three-dimensional pieces applied to an actor's skin to dramatically alter their appearance, their primary purpose is to transform actors into characters that would be impossible or impractical to achieve through traditional makeup or even solely with CGI, in this scene a face prosthetic is used to depict the effect of 'venom' on the character Eddie Brock, this creates a realistic dramatic effect.

Pyrotechnics (e.g. fire, fireworks, explosions):is the science and art of creating fire, explosions, sparks, smoke, and other visual and auditory effects using controlled combustion. In this scene its used to depict a dangerous fire to add drama to the scene.
